As many clients who may have autism or anxiety like to know exactly what to expect when going to a new environment, the below is a detailed overview of the set-up at my home.
Below is a step-by-step overview of what to expect when you visit my home for a session.
Arriving & Parking
- Free parking is available on the residential streets around my home.
- Once your first session is booked, I will send you clear directions to the exact address.
When You Arrive
- When you arrive, please ring the doorbell and I will come down to let you in.
- If you are running late, this will affect the amount of time available for your session, so please try to arrive on time where possible.
My Dog
- I have a friendly cocker spaniel who loves cuddles.
- If you are not comfortable around dogs, just let me know in advance and I won’t let her come to the door.
- She may bark briefly when the doorbell rings, but she is always quiet during sessions and usually sits outside the counselling room.
Inside the House
- There is a downstairs toilet with liquid hand wash that you are welcome to use.
- You are welcome, but not expected, to remove your shoes and coat — whatever helps you feel most comfortable is absolutely fine.
The Counselling Room
- We will go upstairs to the first floor, where there is a dedicated counselling room.
- The room includes:
- A desk at one end
- Three comfortable tub chairs with a small table
- Plenty of plants throughout the space
- You are not expected to sit in the chairs if you don’t want to. Some people prefer to move around or sit on the floor to feel more grounded.
Comfort & Sensory Supports
- There are cushions in a variety of fabrics available to use.
- A box of fidget toys, stones, and beads is provided — you are welcome to pick these up, hold them, or use them throughout the session if you wish.
- On the table, you’ll find filtered water with lemon, served in glasses with small bee designs.
Toilet During the Session
- There is also a toilet with liquid hand wash next to the counselling room.
- You are welcome to use this at any time during the session, though please note that this will reduce your overall therapy time. If possible, it’s recommended to use the toilet before the session begins.
